Migration

Migration in Africa is a complex tapestry of movement, involving millions of individuals traversing both within and beyond the region in search of opportunities, safety, and a better future. The latest figures paint a vivid picture of this phenomenon, underlining the significant increase in international migration within the African continent over the years. As migration continues to shape the African landscape, the Pan African Youth Movement (PAYM) has taken proactive steps to address the challenges and opportunities presented by this dynamic.

Understanding the Migration Landscape

The statistics reveal a compelling narrative of African migration dynamics. From 2015 to 2020, the number of Africans residing in another African country surged from approximately 18 million to over 21 million. Concurrently, the diaspora spread beyond the region, with the number of Africans living in different regions rising from around 17 million in 2015 to over 19.5 million in 2020. Notably, international migration within the African region has witnessed a significant uptick since 2000.

Europe stands out as a prominent destination for African migrants, with approximately 11 million African-born individuals residing in the continent in 2020. Asia and Northern America also host substantial African migrant populations, fostering a diverse and interconnected global migrant network.

Despite the predominance of intra-regional migration, the influx of migrants born outside the African region remains relatively stable, with most originating from Asia and Europe. The gender distribution among migrants in top destination countries is largely balanced, underscoring the diverse demographic composition of African migrants.

The Humanitarian Imperative: Displacement and Refugees

Displacement within and from Africa remains a poignant reality, with conflict and violence serving as primary drivers of internal displacements. Neighboring countries often bear the burden of hosting refugees, exemplifying the interconnectedness of regional challenges.

South Sudan emerges as a significant country of origin for refugees in Africa, with millions seeking asylum due to ongoing conflicts. Countries like Uganda, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Sudan play pivotal roles in hosting large refugee populations, demonstrating solidarity amidst adversity.

PAYM’s Initiatives: High-Level Migration Forums and Policy Briefs

In response to the multifaceted migration landscape in Africa, the Pan African Youth Movement has spearheaded high-level migration forums and policy briefs to address the pressing issues at hand. These strategic platforms serve as catalysts for dialogue, advocacy, and policy formulation, aiming to empower youth voices and drive impactful change.

Through comprehensive research, targeted advocacy, and collaborative partnerships, PAYM endeavors to create a conducive environment for informed decision-making and sustainable action on migration issues. By engaging stakeholders at all levels, including policymakers, civil society, and the youth themselves, PAYM seeks to foster inclusive solutions that prioritize the rights and well-being of all individuals affected by migration.

As Africa stands at a crossroads of opportunity and challenge, the Pan African Youth Movement remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing youth-led initiatives that promote social cohesion, resilience, and prosperity across the continent. Through collective action and shared vision, Africa’s youth have the power to shape a future where migration is a pathway to empowerment, unity, and progress for all.
